Title : High-speed Data Stream Mining Techniques for Intelligent Applications

Abstract

Intelligent application is characterized by its ability to make decision autonomously. Some examples are distributed agents that collaboratively complete a complex task, yet each one of them is able to work and reason independently given the dynamic situation where they are in. The underlying think tank is often a collection of core mechanisms that include environment sensing, data capturing, data mining, ETL, knowledge processing, and decision making etc. All these techniques when placed and function together as a whole intelligent system, they will have to fulfill stringent deadlines imposed by the requirements of a real-time system. In the literature many research papers can be found on a wide variety of data mining techniques that enable intelligent applications operating in real-time. In this talk, Dr. Fong provides a critical review of the relevant literature, identifies their shortcomings which are so-called the technical gaps between the real-time requirements of a general intelligent system and the supporting components. A discussion follows on the possibilities of future intelligent applications that are empowered by data stream mining. In particular, a new technique that has been recently invented by Dr. FongĄ¯s research group called Optimal Very Fast Decision Tree (OVFDT) will be introduced. OVFDT can outperform other VFDT techniques in terms of prediction accuracy and memory requirement.

Short Bio

Simon Fong graduated from La Trobe University, Australia, with a 1st Class Honours BEng. Computer Systems degree and a PhD. Computer Science degree in 1993 and 1998 respectively. Simon is now working as an Assistant Professor at the Computer and Information Science Department of the University of Macau. He is also one of the founding members of the Data Analytics and Collaborative Computing Research Group in the Faculty of Science and Technology. Prior to joining the University of Macau, he worked as an Assistant Professor in the School of Computer Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Before his academic career, Simon took up various managerial and technical posts, such as systems engineer, IT consultant and e-commerce director in Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore. Some companies that he worked before include Hong Kong Telecom, Singapore Network Services, AES Pro-Data and United Oversea Bank, Singapore. Dr. Fong has published over 130 international conference and journal papers, mostly in the area of E-Commerce technology, Business Intelligence and Data-mining.

Title : Strategic Use of Social Networking Service at Higher Educational Institutes

Abstract

Social networking service (SNS) is one of the most powerful and flexible tools available for many-to-many communications. It is also one of the most rapidly growing segments of Web 2.0. The youth like college students explores and uses SNS most actively. In fact, this is the first time in human history where the youth has more knowledge and skills of something that significantly influences our society.

SNS is often seen as relationship facilitators among people. Studies indicate various benefits of SNS such as the ability to keep in touch with friends, to establish new relationships with others, and to feel a sense of community within the social network to which they belong.

However, we do not yet fully understand how to utilize SNS as well as what the long term effects of SNS are on our organizations and society. In fact, it is said that Internet is the first product human being has ever invented without knowing how it is going to be used in advance.

Casual observation of the use of SNS among students shows that most youth use SNS as a convenient communication tool like phone or chatting. However, as we all have observed, SNS can become a formidable tools overthrowing Middle East governments or expanding contact pools for business purposes.

Higher educational institutes like universities teach students who are the most active users of SNS. However, the institutes do not yet fully utilize SNS for improving their main functions. SNS can be a very powerful tool for the institutes to strengthen their competitive positions on education, research and administrative activities. There are not yet rich research activities on this subject. However, some lesson can be learned from studies on the use of SNS by other areas such as business, medical, political, social, commerce, etc.
