Research Field and Interests:

His fields of research are primarily nanoelectronics(Nano Flash Memory) with a variety of experiences such as magnetic media/head, high Tc superconducting films and devices, diamond thin films and devices.

Professional Activities:

In 2001, he was a general secretary of the governmental planning committee for the 10 years Korea Nanotechnology Initiative. This plan has been revised in 2005 under the guidance of Dr. Lee as a principle investigator. He was serving as a first vice president of Korean nanotechnology research society in charge of international affairs and a chairman of advisory committee for nanotechnology information. He is also working as a Korean-side chairman of advisory committee for Korea-US nanotechnology forum and was an NT focal point of Korea-UK focal point programs. He has been serving as an editor-in-chief of Korea Nanotechnology Annul since 2003. He has been also serving as Chair, NANO KOREA 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 Symposium Steering Committee. He completed national nanotechnology roadmap (Feb. 2008) and national nanotechnology standardization development roadmap (Oct. 2007) as a principle investigator. He was served as a general chair of IEEE-Nanotechnology Conference 2010.

Title : Crowdsourcing Radio Map Construction for Wi-Fi Positioning Systems

Summary

A radio map is a collection of fingerprints and their collected location information. To build more accurate Wi-Fi positioning system (WPS), a more precise radio map should be constructed. GPS signals are commonly used as reference locations to tag the collected fingerprints. However, as GPS signals are usually unreachable indoors, most of the fingerprints collected in indoor venues have not been used for the radio map. As a result, WPS has not been able to achieve high performance in accuracy in indoor venues even with so many Wi-Fi signals surrounding us. This talk introduces novel approaches for crowdsourcing radio map construction for Wi-Fi positioning systems without accompanying GPS signals. Since the method can utilize Wi-Fi signals collected in indoor venues, a more precise radio map construction is possible. For performance evaluation, we tested the method in three distinctively selected residential and commercial areas in Daejeon and one in Seoul, Korea by collecting around 19,000 Wi-Fi fingerprints at about 1,000 measure points in total. Our data revealed that location accuracy is dependent on the volume of the collected data, and once the data collection rate rises above 50%, the average error distance is within 10 m or less.

Short Bio

Professor Dongsoo Han received the BS and MS degrees in Computer Science from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea in 1989 and 1991, and the Ph.D. degree in Information Science from Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan in 1996. He is currently a professor with the Department of Computer Science, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (http://cs.kaist.ac.kr), Taejon, Korea. Prof. Han is leading Intelligent Service Integration Laboratory (http://isilab.kaist.ac.kr) and performing researches mainly in the fields of IT based convergence technologies especially focused on Wi-Fi based indoor positioning and indoor navigation. He is director of indoor positioning research center (IPRC), which he founded at KAIST in 2011. He is leading Special Interest Group of Location Engineering at KAIST. He is a board member of the Korea Institute of Intelligent Transport Systems.

Dr. Seo earned a BS (Seoul National University), a PhD (Texas A&M University), an Honorary Doctor of Economics (Pukyong National University), and an Honorary Doctor of Engineering (Chonnam National University). Currently he is a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology(KAIST) and a Chair Professor of Sunchon National University. He is also the Chairman of the Personal Space Service Association, and the e-Trade Facilitation Committee of Korea International Trade Association.

Title : "Digital Atlases of Human Anatomy and Their Applications to Computer Assisted Diagnosis"

Yen-Wei Chen received the B.E. degree in 1985 from Kobe Univ., Kobe, Japan, the M.E. degree in 1987, and the D.E. degree in 1990, both from Osaka Univ., Osaka, Japan. He was a research fellow with the Institute of Laser Technology, Osaka, from 1991 to 1994,. From Oct. 1994 to Mar. 2004, he was an associate Professor and a professor with the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Univ. of the Ryukyus, Okinawa, Japan. He is currently a professor and vice dean with the college of Information Science and Engineering, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto, Japan. He was a visiting professor with the Oxford University, Oxford, UK in 2003 and a visiting professor with Pennsylvania State University, USA in 2010.
His research interests include medical image analysis, pattern recognition and computational intelligence. He has published more than 300 research papers in a number of leading journals and leading conferences including IEEE Trans. Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, Signal Processing, Neurocomputing and MICCAI, ICPR, ICIP. He has received many distinguished awards including Watanabe Mitsuhiko Award, Outstanding Chinese Oversea Scholar Fund of Chinese Academy of Science.
Dr. Chen is associate Editors of International Journal of Image and Graphics (IJIG), International Journal of Image Processing (IJIP), and Journal of Convergence Information Technology (JCIT), and a member of Editorial Board for a number of academic journals. He also served as a guest editor of an issue/volume of 4 international journals including Information, International Journal of Computation Intelligence and Applications. He was invited to serve as a general chair or a program chair of several international conference including IIHMSP2009, SEDM2010 and ICCIT2011.

Summary

Atlas of human anatomy is an important teaching tool in the in the medical community. In the recent years, digital atlases of human anatomy have become popular and hot topics in medical image analysis research field. In Japan, we started a new national project called computational anatomy which is focused on construction of digital atlases of human anatomy and their applications to computer assisted diagnosis. The basic idea of the digital atlas is to capture the organ variability of its position, shape and voxel intensity (texture) from a training set (either different individuals (inter-patient variability) or the same individual (intra-patient variability)). In this speech, I will talk about current progress and futures of computational anatomy and its application to computer assisted diagnosis.
